Let's Get Organized

Tips for organizing your closet

Fall is the time to organize your closet!

If you live in a climate like Minnesota, you have summer clothes and winter clothes.  Once that cooler, refreshing fall weather starts to settle in, its time to pull out those sweaters and long sleeve shirts and long pants and put away the tanks and capris.

This is a great time to go through your clothes and your kids closets to get ready for the cooler weather, and maybe collect some cash for clothes you no longer need.

I recommend that you allocate a couple hours to switch over your closets.  Take everything out of your closet and through it on your bed.  As you decide what goes back in, be ruthless if you didn’t wear it this summer are you really going to wear it next summer?  Probably not.  If you love it, but need to lose weight to wear it, here are some guidelines:

  • if you need to lose 5 lbs to wear it, keep 5 items
  • if you need to lose 10 lbs to wear it, keep 2 items
  • if you need to lose more than 10 lbs to wear it, let it go - if you love 10 lbs you deserve to go buy something new

If you still find it hard to get rid of items you no longer wear consider taking a picture of it or saving a picture of a time when you were wearing the item.  If you aren’t going to wear it, do you really want to use up space to store it.  I’ve also seen quilts made of jeans and favorite t shirts as a way of preserving memories.

For your out of season clothes, wash them before you put them away.  You can use space bags or clear storage bins to store them safely through the winter.  Label the container so you can easily find them if you need to pack for a vacation during the winter.  If you don’t have storage space for the out of season items, put them away in the back of the closet in the harder to reach areas.  Consider installing a second shelf above the existing shelf to store out of season clothing.

As you start to organize the closet, be prepared with bags/boxes labeled with donate/consignment.  Most consignment stores will accept items in clean, like new condition if the item is a classic style or less than 2 years old.  You can feel good about donating the items that you no longer wear, as it will be going to someone not as fortunate as you.

When returning your items to the closet, I recommend that you organize them by top/bottom and color.  Put all your blouses, jackets, tops together and organize them by color.  Then your skirts, pants, bottoms go together again by color.  This makes it so much easier to find something to wear on those hectic weekday mornings.

Consider putting up hooks along the walls of your closet for things like scarves, belts, ties, purses, hats.  Make it visual and easy to see.

Fold up sweaters and stack them on the shelf above the rod.  Consider a shoe organizer for the back of a door to corral all of the shoes and make them easily visible and accessible.
