Let's Get Organized

Suggestions for creating an organized environment for learning

Having an organized environment is essential for our brains, create an atmosphere conducive to learning for their homework and stick to a regular routine.  If you want them to do their homework before they can watch TV, then set that up at the beginning of the school year and stick with it.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Pull the paperwork out of the backpack every day - take some time at the beginning of the homework session to go thru their papers from the day and discuss their homework assignments.  Look for any notes from the teachers, permission slips, etc. that require your attention.

  • Create a place in your home where the backpacks can be hung on hooks and any paperwork that needs attention can be stored.  Hang a mail holder on the wall with a slot for each family member.  Hang a large monthly erasable calendar or white board in this area to keep track of upcoming events.

  • For younger kids - pick out the outfits for each day on the weekend depending upon the weeks events.  Put each outfit in a ziploc bag, one for each day.  Iron on the weekend, so its not a mad rush in the morning.

  • If you have bathroom scheduling challenges, then set a schedule for it!  Use a kitchen timer to keep everyone on schedule.

  • Set up a schedule for other things that can cause conflicts like who sits in the front seat or who gets to wear a favorite jacket or outfit on which days.

  • Keep them motivated - if the good grades isn’t motivation enough, then maybe points toward privileges or itunes songs will do the trick.  Give kids more and more responsibility as they grow.
