Let's Get Organized

Storage ideas for purses, shoes, accessories and clothing

January is GO Month!  Get Organized Month.

Let's start with your closets.  We go to our closet every single day to find something to wear that will make us feel good and look great.  If going to your closet is a frustrating experience for you there are some things you can do to make it a better experience by getting your closet organized a little better.

The first thing to do is take everything out, yes I mean everything!  Be sure that you have a couple hours to do this project, or better yet, hire us to get it done in half the time!

CLOTHING

First take out all of the clothing and lay it out on your bed.  Start by looking at each item individually.  Sort your items into the following categories:

1)  Love this, I wear it all the time (goes back in your closet).

2) Love this, but its out of season (goes into a storage area for out of season clothing).

3) Let it go (can be sorted later into donate vs. consignment).

4) Love this, but its too small (If you have to lose 5 lbs to wear it, keep 3 of these items.  If you have to lose 10 lbs to wear it, keep 2.  More than 10lbs put it in the let it go pile).  (These items go into the storage for out of season clothing).

5) Special Occassion clothing that you aren't willing to let go of yet (goes into a storage area with out of season clothing).

The main idea with this sorting is that the only clothing going back in your closet are the things that you are wearing right now all the time.  Think about your closet as prime real estate.  Clothing items that you aren't wearing right now don't belong here, find another place for them.

SHOES,  PURSES, ACCESSORIES (scarves, belts, etc.)

Next, take all of your shoes, purses and accessories out of the closet.  Sort them into the same categories as your clothing.

Finally, take anything else out that you are storing in your closet and decide if you want to use your prime real estate for these items or if you can find another location to store them.

Once you have everything out of your closet wipe down the shelves and walls so they are nice and clean.  Now is the time to consider making some storage decisions for your closet.  Some ideas to consider:

  • adding a second shelf above the existing shelf that is just above your hanging rod (this second, higher shelf is a great option for storing out of season items or your lesser worn items)
  • hooks for your belts, scarves, and other accessories
  • storage solutions from the Container Store:

Purse Storage Options

Shoe Storage Options

Accessory Storage Options

Closet Storage Options

When you begin putting everything back, put your most often worn items in the prime spots where they are easily visible to you.  Organize all of your tops together, bottoms together.  Then further organize your tops into blouses (by color), sweaters (by color), casual wear and the same with your bottoms.  Put all your dresses together.

Once you have chosen your storage options for things like shoes and purses, place these storage items where you can easily find and see them to make it easy to select what to wear.

Now that you have your closet put back together, you still have your piles on your bed.

1) Decide where you can store your out of season, saving for weight loss and special occassion clothing.  Put these away.

2) Go through your Let it Go pile.  If you have items that are classic styled or within the past 2 years and they are in like new condition, consider taking them into your local consignment store.  If this is too much work, then bag everything up and take it to your local shelter, charity or Goodwill.

Now, stand back and admire your work!  You will find that you will have a new experience going to your closet and picking out something fabulous to wear!
