Let's Get Organized

Organizing your kids rooms

organizing kids toys

Does this look familiar?  Kids rooms and toys are a special challenge.  Here are some ideas and valuable advice on keeping your kids rooms organized.

When you are organizing in your kids room, get down to their level and see the room the way they see it.   Try to imagine what its like for your child to find their things and put them away.  The easier you make it to put things away, the easier nightly clean up will be.  Start teaching your kids good organizing skills as soon as they are ready to learn.  Develop a regular day to day routine of nightly pick up and put away the toys and clothes.

Keep your kids room as clear of clutter as possible to make it easier for them to keep it clean. Anything that is not used on a regular basis might be better off in a different location.  If you can keep items in the room to a minimum, it will leave more space to keep things more organized.  Think about rotation - rotate books and toys - put half of them away and then swap them out every month or so.

If your child has collections of dolls or bears that you would like to display but keep out of reach, put a decorative shelf up at 10” below the ceiling.

Clothing

  • Sort out your kids clothes at least 2x a year (spring and fall), more frequently depending upon their ages.  If you are saving clothes for the next kid  start a bin for the things your next child can wear.  Be sure to label the bin with the size and season of the clothing.  Store the bin someplace other than your child’s room, unless you have plenty of closet space in their room.
  • Make it easy for younger kids to hang up their clothes with hooks hung at their eye level
  • Put hooks for their coats in your mud room or entry
  • Lower the rod in the closet and teach your kids how to hang up their own clothes
  • Put pictures on drawers so they know whats in each drawer

Toys

  • Clear shoe box size bins work well for toys with small parts - label the box with fun, brightly colored labels with pictures of the contents
  • Rotate toys - put some toys away and rotate them periodically
  • Stuffed animals can be hung in a hammock that is hung from hooks in the ceiling, keep the favorites on the bed
  • Store collections like Legos in a large clear bin
  • Put labels on the bins so the child knows where things go, you can make a game out of finding the matching label for the items being put away
  • Designate places for different kinds of toys like Barbies, Polly Pockets, Cars, etc.   If the bin gets too full then its time to get rid of some - if it won’t all fit then its time to clean it out.

Electronics

  • Utilize specific sized containers to contain game cartridges
  • Hang a CD rack on the wall
