Let's Get Organized

Home organizing rules March 2010

1.  Touch it Once - put things away instead of leaving them laying around like putting your clothes in the laundry basket rather than on the floor

2.  Keep like items together - organize by keeping things together - like all household manuals in one folder for example

3.  Take things one step at a time - pick one drawer or one shelf and start there, set aside 15 minutes a day to get started

4.  Learn to let go - if you haven't used it in a year chances are you don't need it anymore

An exercise to help with learning to let go
  • Ask yourself these questions about the item
    • why am I keeping this?
    • how is it benefitting me to keep this?
    • what would I gain by letting it go?

Sometimes just taking a minute to focus on the item can help you to learn to let go.
